I received this audiobook for review from Iambik Audio through Audiobook Jukebox's Solid Gold Reviewer Program. I did not receive any compensation for my review, and the views expressed herein are my own.

This is a science-fiction novel which takes place in Calgary, Alberta, Canada in 2043. In this futuristic world, there are both humans and cyborgs.

The book starts with the crime described in the synopsis: A woman is found naked and alone in a room that is locked from the inside with no apparent cause of death. Other crimes start to crop up in the city, including a bank heist and multiple homicides. Somehow, these seemingly random crimes are related, and it is up to Superintendent Frank Steele and his team to figure it out. Unfortunately, it appears that I am not as bright as Frank Steele because I remained a little lost and puzzled throughout the book! I found it difficult to keep the facts straight between each of the crimes, as well as the characters. Having said that, I still liked the book.

I enjoyed the characters, who are all flawed in some way. In Frank's case, he is an alcoholic who longs for one of his detectives.

Trenholm writes some of the funniest quips that I have read in a long time! I love when authors inject some humour into their work.

Overall, it was an enjoyable read. If my library has a copy of the second in the series, I would probably be tempted to read it to see what happens next to Frank.

This is my first narration by Art Carlson. I thought his narration was fine, although there is some white noise in the background throughout the entire reading. It is not overly bothersome, but it is something that I noticed immediately.

MY RATING: 3 stars! I liked it!

Defining Diana (Audible Audio Edition) Hayden Trenholm Art Carlson Iambik Audio Inc Books Reviews

Amazing near-future police procedural about a Calgary cop investigating murders linked to half-human half-machine borgs and uploaded consciousnesses. Great characters, lots of gritty details, and a page-turning plot. Terrific first novel by the Aurora Award-winning Canadian SF writer. Highly recommended.
Defining Diana has a distinctive style, that of the detective noir pulps of the past. The main characters are deeply flawed, to the point where they first appear as caricatures. As the story progresses, the characters are fleshed out. Hayden also plays with character point of view in his novel. While most of the story is narrated in third person, the main chracter of Frank Steele is narrated in first person. This was an interesting choice to make. This deepened my sense of the whole detective noir feel, with the lone detective talking to his bottle of Jack Daniels. In conjuction with the noir style, the switch in POV was quite distracting early on. The first part of the novel was an introduction to the characters, and while I could appreciate some of the stylistic elements, they weren't familiar ones to me.

Once I overcame my problems with the style, and the main plot had developed more, the story did indeed become gripping. I found Hayden's vision of a future Calgary fascinating. The merging of the noir theme with cyberpunk and posthumanist motifs was quite interesting.

I admit fear at one point, where something similar to the phrase "he had suffered for his research, and now so would I" was written, but thankfully that was once again a conscious decision by Hayden where he then painted a vague outline of the necessary science, rather than forcing an infodump on the reader.

Instead of focusing on the technobabble, Trenholm digs down to some more interesting philosophical questions regarding bio engineering, and the definition of what it means to be human.

Despite the slow hook, Defining Diana finished quite strongly, and is followed by a great sequel, Steel Whispers.
